Pirates Roster Moves: Shugart Recalled, Moreta Sent Down

The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled right-handed reliever Chase Shugart from Triple-A Indianapolis ahead of Thursday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds. To make room for him on the active roster, fellow right-hander Dauri Moreta was optioned to the minor leagues.
Shugart has made 34 appearances out of the bullpen for the Pirates to start the season and is 4-3 with a 3.50 ERA. He earned his first-career win on April 22 against the Angels in Los Angeles.
Shugart was optioned to Indianapolis on Aug. 20. In 12 appearances at Triple-A on the season, he went 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA with 20 strikeouts in 20.2 innings.
Moreta made his return from Tommy John surgery this season and went 1-1 with a 3.24 ERA in 18 appearances. In 16.2 innings, he allowed 16 hits, walked seven and struck out 19.
Moreta pitched the 10th inning against the Reds in the Pirates’ 4-3 win on Wednesday night and allowed automatic runner TJ Friedl to score to tie the game at 3-all.
