Pirates Roster Moves: Oneil Cruz Placed on Injured List, Hot Hitter Recalled

Oneil Cruz, Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed center fielder Oneil Cruz on the seven-day concussion injured list. Cruz left Tuesday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers after a collision with Jack Suwinski while both were diving attempting to make a catch in left-center.

Cruz has totaled 108 games with the Pirates this season and owns a .207/.304/.398 batting line with 17 doubles, two triples, 18 home runs, 51 RBI and a league-leading 34 stolen bases. He’s played 101 games in center field.

The Pirates will be without his services for at least a week.

To take his place on the active roster, the Pirates recalled outfielder Ronny Simon from Triple-A Indianapolis. Simon was claimed off waivers from the Miami Marlins on June 2.

In 52 games with Indianapolis the 25-year-old hit slashed .291/.384/.447 with nine doubles, one triple, seven home runs, 30 RBI and 24 stolen bases.

Though the bulk of his defensive work as a professional has come in the infield, the Pirates used Simon as an outfielder after adding him to the organization. He totaled 34 appearances in left field, seven in right and 11 as a designated hitter.

Simon made his MLB debut with the Marlins this season and hit .234 with a .604 OPS in 19 games.

Simon will bat leadoff and play right fielder for the Pirates on Wednesday afternoon against the Brewers in Milwaukee. He will wear No. 63.
