Pirates Roster Moves: Jared Triolo Reinstated, Catcher Acquired From Padres

The Pittsburgh Pirates have reinstated infielder Jared Triolo from the 10-day injured list prior to Wednesday’s game against the Washington Nationals. He will bat sixth and play second base.
Prior to landing on the IL with a lumbar spine strain, Triolo appeared in six games to begin the season and went 1 for 17. He played in a rehab game for Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday night and went 2 for 3 with a home run, two RBI, a walk and two runs scored.
Triolo is capable of playing all four infield positions and gives the Pirates a needed insurance policy at shortstop and first base. The Pirates are currently down Spencer Horwitz and Endy Rodríguez, leaving Enmanuel Valdez and Adam Frazier as the other first base options on the roster. Isiah Kiner-Falefa is the only active player to appear in a game at short this season.
To make room for Triolo on the roster, the Pirates optioned Tsung-Che Cheng to Indianapolis. Cheng played three games for the Pirates after getting called up last week and went hitless in seven at-bats.
Pirates Swing a Trade
The Pirates added some catching depth, acquiring Brett Sullivan from the San Diego Padres for outfielder Bryce Johnson and cash considerations.
Sullivan, 31, appeared in 40 games with the Padres from 2023-24. He slashed .206/.243/.299 with three doubles, two home runs and eight RBIs. In 10 games with Triple-A El Paso this season, Sullivan hit .231 with a .570 OPS.
In addition to catching, Sullivan has experience in left field and at both corner infield spots during his professional career.
Sullivan was designated for assignment by the Padres last month and cleared waivers, so he will not need to be added to the 40-man roster.
The Pirates signed Johnson as a minor-league free agent this offseason and went 2 for 25 in Triple-A to start the season. He totaled 88 games in the big leagues between 2022-24 with the Padres and Giants.
