Pirates Roster Moves: Génesis Cabrera DFA’d for Johan Oviedo

The Pittsburgh Pirates needed to make room on the active roster for starting pitcher Johan Oviedo, who will return to the mound at PNC Par for the first time since 2023 against the San Francisco Giants on Monday night.
Prior to the start of the game the Pirates are designated left-handed reliever Génesis Cabrera for assignment, according to manager Don Kelly.
Cabrera made nine appearances out of the bullpen for Pittsburgh after he was signed as a free agent at the end of June. Across 11 innings in total, the 28-year-old posted a 4.91 ERA, allowed 12 hits, walked one and struck out seven.
The roster move gives the Pirates one left-handed option out of the bullpen in Ryan Borucki, who was reinstated from the 15-day injured list on Friday.
Oviedo’s last start with the Pirates came on Sep. 27, 2023. The right-hander underwent Tommy John in the ensuing offseason and suffered a setback with a lat injury at spring training this year .
Oviedo made six rehab starts across four different levels and posted a 3.12 ERA (6er/17.1ip) while striking out 21 batters and only walking four.
In 72 career big-league appearances, the 27-year-old is 13-25 with a 4.32 ERA. He totaled 39 starts with the Pirates between 2022-23 after he was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals and went 11-16 with a 4.15 ERA.
No 40-man roster spot was needed for Oviedo as the Pirates had three open spots following the trade deadline.
