Pirates Reinstate Ka’ai Tom from IL, Designate Him for Assignment

Published

Today, the Pirates announced that they have returned outfielder Ka’ai Tom from his rehab stint at Triple-A Indianapolis, reinstated him from the 10-day injured list and designated him for assignment.

Tom, 27, has been on the injured list since July 3 with a lower back strain.

The Pirates claimed him off waivers from the Oakland A’s back in April, who had selected him in the Rule 5 draft from Cleveland. In 39 games with the Pirates, Tom hit .152 (14 for 92) with two homers, 11 RBIs and a .569 OPS.

If no team acquires the services of Tom, he will have to be offered back to Cleveland as part of not meeting his Rule 5 eligibility standards with the Pirates.

The Pirates now have one open spot on their 40-man roster.
