PITTSBURGH — In wake of Oneil Cruz’s injury, the Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled utility man Mark Mathias from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Mathias, acquired from the Texas Rangers during spring training, has gotten off to a torrid start with Triple-A Indianapolis to begin their season. Through nine games, Mathias is slashing .333/.459/.467 with a double, a homer, two RBIs and a stolen base.

Mathias has appeared at second base, third base and in left field for Indianapolis in 2023. The 28-year-old also has experience at shortstop and first base in his professional career and had a lone appearance in center.

He will man second base and bat eighth for the Pirates on Monday against the Houston Astros.

Cruz, who underwent surgery on his fractured left ankle, is expected to be sidelined for the next four months.
