Following the Pittsburgh Pirates trade of Robert Stephenson to the Tampa Bay Rays, the Pirates have recalled infielder Mark Mathias from Triple-A Indianapolis to fill his roster spot.

Additionally, Duane Underwood Jr. cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Indianapolis.

This will be Mathias’ second stint with the Pirates this season. In 15 games during his first stint, Mathias hit .275 with a .695 OPS and drove in four runs for the Pirates. Mathias has posted an impressive .294 batting average with Triple-A Indianapolis with a .831 OPS and a pair of home runs.

Underwood will remain with the organization after being designated for assignment by the club last week.

Underwood, who has been with the Pirates since 2021, was 1-0 with a 5.18 ERA and a pair 0f saves in 20 appearances with the Pirates this season.
