Pirates Recall Cam Vieaux; Canaan Smith-Njigba Placed on Injured List
Canaan Smith-Njigba’s first stint in the major leagues wasn’t a long one.
In just his second game, Smith-Njigba injured his right wrist and has been placed on the 60-day injured list.
The team has announced that the 23-year old suffered a displaced fracture of the schaphoid bone in his right wrist.
To take his place on the roster, the Pirates have recalled left-handed pitcher Cam Vieaux from AAA Indianapolis. This will be Vieaux’s major league debut.
The 28-year old was drafted by the Pirates in the 6th Round of the 2016 MLB Draft. This season with Indianapolis, Vieaux went 3-0 with a 2.28 ERA, with 23 strikeouts in 27.2 innings. In 18 games, the left-hander held opponents to a .147 batting average and had a 0.90 WHIP.
This is Vieaux’s first full season as relief pitcher.
In his first six seasons as a starter in the Pirates organization, Vieaux was 38-27 with a 3.76 ERA In 132 appearances (593.1 innings, 472 strikeouts and a 1.26 WHIP). Back in 2018, he was named AA Altoona’s Pitcher of the Year.
