Pirates Re-Sign RHP Chase De Jong to Minor League Deal

In addition to adding right-handed pitcher Austin Brice, the Pirates announced on Thursday that they’ve brought back fellow righty Chase De Jong with a minor league pact. The deal includes an invite to spring training.

De Jong was signed as a non-roster invitee with the Pirates in 2021 and eventually pitched for Triple-A Indianapolis. There, he went 2-0 with a 3.60 ERA in four starts. The Pirates called him up to the Major League roster at the end of May and made nine starts for the Bucs before undergoing season-ending surgery on his knee on July 27.

With the Pirates, De Jong went 1-4 with a 5.77 ERA in nine starts. The 28-year-old gives the Pirates some more starting pitching depth which is important given the circumstances of a more abbreviated spring training.

De Jong has spent five years in the big leagues with the Pirates, Mariners, Twins and Astros.
