Fans became angered during the Pittsburgh Pirates first homestand of the season when it was evident the Bucco Bricks that made up the ground on the sidewalks outside of PNC Park were no more.

That anger grew after it was revealed the bricks were abandoned in a recycling facility with no word of a plan of replacement.

On Wednesday, team president Travis Williams penned an open letter to fans announcing a program giving Pirates fans who donated to the original Bucco Brick program an opportunity to receive a complimentary commemorative replica of their brick.

“I know how meaningful the messages and tributes are. We respect that. We appreciate that,” Williams wrote in his letter. “We are, and have always been, absolutely committed to ensuring these special messages and tributes live on permanently at PNC Park.”

The Pirates reiterated that this is the third time the Pirates have to replace the bricks due to a variety of reasons including safety hazards.

In his letter, Williams stressed the need for a more lasting display.

“We have expedited the development of that new permanent display showcasing these messages in a manner that is worthy of their deep personal meaning,” he said.

The latest development surrounding the bricks is part of an ongoing effort to show fans how much they mean to the organization, according to Williams.

“My hope is that, through our actions, you will be assured that we appreciate you and we care about you,” he wrote.

To receive a replica brick, original donors are asked to visit www.pirates.com/buccobricks and complete the form.
