Pirates Prospect Watch: Travis Swaggerty Starts Rehab Assignment

Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Travis Swaggerty officially began his rehab assignment on Tuesday. He manned center field and hit second.

Swaggerty didn’t play the entire game, but he went 0 for 1 with a walk and a run scored for the Marauders.

The 25-year-old was placed on the seven-day injured list by Triple-A Indianapolis with an illness back on Apr. 21. In 14 games to start the season, Swaggerty has slashed .231/.310/.442 with four doubles, two triples and a home run.

In addition to Swaggerty, here are the Pirates’ prospects of note from Tuesday night’s action.

Indianapolis (21-24)

LF Canaan Smith-Njigba

  • Game stats: 1 for 4, one home run, one RBI, one run, one walk
  • Season stats: .222/.344/.481, five doubles, three home runs, eight RBIs, two steals, 15 games

C Endy Rodriguez

  • Game stats: 2 for 4, two doubles, one walk
  • Season stats: .248/.351/.434, five doubles, two triples, four home runs, 13 RBIs, four steals, 29 games

Smith-Njigba hit his third homer of the year with the Indians and Rodriguez doubled twice but Indianapolis was defeated 6-5 by the Columbus

Pirates prospect Maclom Nuñez went 2 for 3 with an RBI, a run and a walk.

Altoona (19-19)

RF Connor Scott

  • Game stats:  2 for 4, one triple, one double, three RBIs, one run
  • Season stats: .170/.218/.245, three doubles, two home runs 13 RBIs, three steals, 26 games

RHP Sean Sullivan

  • Game stats: 7.0 innings, seven hits, three runs, one walk, five strikeouts
  • Season stats: 1-0, 2.60 ERA, 10er/34.2ip, 28 hits, 12 walks, 29 strikeouts, seven appearances/seven starts

Scott had a pair of extra-base hits and drove in three while Sullivan tossed a season-high seven innings in Altoona’s 6-3 win over the Hartford Yard Goats. The Curve got back to .500 on the year with the victory.

Pirates prospect Matt Fraizer had two hits and scored a run while Jacob Gonzalez drove in a pair. Catcher Henry Davis singled, walked and stole a base.

Greensboro (21-19)

SS Mike Jarvis

  • Game stats: 2 for 4, one home run, one double, two RBIs, three runs, one walk
  • Season stats: .214/.308/.407, seven doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 25 RBIs, 10 steals, 30 games

C Wyatt Hendrie

  • Game stats: 2 for 4, one home run, one double, one RBI, two runs
  • Season stats: .281/.343/.563, three doubles, two home runs, three RBIs, nine games

Jarvis and Hendrie powered Greensboro to a 10-8 win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods.

In addition to those two Pirates’ prospects, Tsung-Che Cheng and Jase Bowen also had two-hit games. On the mound, Po-Yu Chen allowed only one run in five innings and punched out six.

Bradenton (22-18)

2B Termarr Johnson

  • Game stats: 2 for 4, one RBI
  • Season stats: .265/.405/.353, three doubles, one home run, 10 RBIs, one steal, 21 games

RHP Blake Cederlind

  • Game stats: 2.0 innings, no hits, no runs, one walk, two strikeouts
  • Season stats: 1-1, 16.20 ERA, 9er/5.0ip, six hits, six walks, four strikeouts, four appearances

Johnson collected a pair of hits and an RBI in the Marauders 3-2 win over the Jupiter Hammerheads in 10 innings. Working his way back from injury, Cederlind looked the best he has to date this season.

Pirates prospect Shalin Polanco delivered the walk-off hit with an RBI-single in the 10th.
