Pirates Prospect Watch: Nick Gonzales, Henry Davis Homer For Altoona

Pittsburgh Pirates-Nick Gonzales

After a lackluster Thursday, the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians and Double-A Altoona Curve responded with some good performances on Friday.

Indianapolis lost, but Altoona prevailed against Reading as both Nick Gonzales and Henry Davis got the job done on offense.

Though he’s not a prospect, All-Star closer David Bednar pitched a scoreless inning of relief for Indianapolis as he inched his way closer to a return for the Pirates.

Here are the notable performances from Friday night.

Indianapolis Indians (70-68)

CF Jared Oliva

  • Game: 1 for 4 with a home run, three RBIs and a run
  • Season: .261/..314/.432, 19 doubles, three triples, eight home runs, 35 RBIs, 17 steals, 89 games

LF Blake Sabol

  • Game: 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs
  • Season: .308/.419/.558, two doubles, a triple, three home runs, 11 RBIs, 15 games

The Indians fell to the Toledo Mud Hens 9-6, but Sabol and Oliva both stayed hot at the plate.

Tucupita Marcano and Travis Swaggerty both collected a pair of hits, as did Brendt Citta.

Altoona Curve 

C Henry Davis

  • Game: 2 for 4 with a home run, two RBIs and a run
  • Season: .211/.323/.385, seven doubles, four home runs, 18 RBIs, 29 games

2B Nick Gonzales

  • Game: 2 for 4 with a home run and an RBI
  • Season: .262/.384/.425, 20 doubles, seven home runs, 32 RBIs, five steals, 69 games

In addition to Gonzales and Davis, Malcom Nunez had pair of hits and drove in two in the Curve’s 5-1 win over the Reading Fightin’ Phils.

Matt Gorski doubled as part of a two-hit performance.

Carmen Mlodzinski was excellent in the start for Altoona, holding Reading scoreless through five innings on four hits, one walk and four strikeouts.
