Pirates Preview: Mike Burrows Makes First-Career Start vs. Brewers

The Pittsburgh Pirates took a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds with a 3-1 win on Wednesday afternoon.

Andrew Heaney held the Reds to one run in 5.0 innings while Henry Davis drove in the go-ahead run in the fourth as part of his first multi-hit game of the season.

Up next on the homestand, the Pirates (17-33) will host the Milwaukee Brewers (24-26) for the start of a four-game series on Thursday night.

First pitch is set for 6:40 p.m. ET, and the game will be broadcast on SportsNet Pittsburgh and 93.7 The Fan.

Rain in the area throughout the day but expected to let up around first pitch. A chilly night with temperatures in the low-50s and winds W at 7-8 mph.

RHP Mike Burrows (2025 debut) Will Start for the Pirates

The Pirates recalled Burrows from Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday and optioned Carmen Mlodzinski.

At the time of his promotion, Burrows was 2-1 with a 2.51 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 32.1 innings. In four appearances this month, the right-hander posted a 1.02 ERA (2er/17.2ip).

Burrows made his MLB debut at the end of last season in New York against the Yankees and got his first win after allowing two runs (one earned) in 3.1 innings of relief.

This will be his first-career start and his first time facing the Brewers.

  • Though they got the win, the Pirates tied the MLB record for consecutive games of scoring four runs or fewer with 26. The last time they scored more than four runs was on Apr. 22 against the Angels.
  • The Pirates are looking for their first three-game winning streak of the season. They haven’t had three-straight wins since winning four in a row from Sep. 8-11 last season.
  • At the time of his promotion, Burrows ranked second in the International League with a 1.02 ERA, 28 strikeouts and a 0.85 WHIP during the month of May.
