Pirates Preview: Jones Duels Glasnow, Dodgers at PNC Park

Jared Jones, Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates dropped a 5-4 rubber match against the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday before an off day on Monday.

In Sunday’s game, Rowdy Tellez was responsible for driving in all four runs for the Pirates (27-32) and collected three hits. The rest of the Pirates’ lineup squandered far too many chances.

After a five-game road trip, the Pirates are back at PNC Park for the start of a series against the National League West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers (38-23) on Tuesday night.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 ET and the game will be aired on SportsNet Pittsburgh.

Weather

Temperatures in the mid 80s and mostly cloudy skies at start time. Winds SE at 6-7 mph.

The Pittsburgh Pirates Will Send Out RHP Jared Jones (3-5, 3.55 ERA)

Though his overall numbers are still impressive, Jones has stumbled a of late.

Over his last three starts, the rookie right-hander has a 6.06 ERA while opponents have hit .272 with an .832 OPS against him.

In his last start against the Detroit Tigers, Jones allowed seven runs (five earned) on five hits with only a pair of strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched.

He’ll look to get back on track against the Dodgers, who he is facing for the first time in his career.

The Los Angeles Dodgers Will Send Out RHP Tyler Glasnow (6-3, 3.04 ERA)

The Dodgers’ decision to trade for Glasnow and promptly extend him this offseason has paid large dividends.

Glasnow leads baseball with 95 strikeouts in 74 innings pitched and his miniscule 2.66 FIP indicates he’s pitched even better than his surface-level numbers showed.

Opponents are hitting well under the Mendoza line against Glasnow this season (.174) and have managed a .549 OPS.

Glasnow, the Pirates’ fifth round pick in 2011, will get to face his former team for the first time.
