The Pittsburgh Pirates opened their three-game series against the Miami Marlins with a 3-2 win at PNC Park on Monday night.

Paul Skenes recorded his 10th win of the season in another dazzling start. Oneil Cruz connected on a long solo home run in the first and Bryan Reynolds drove in a pair of runs in the win.

The Pirates (68-76) will go for a series win with Carmen Mlodzinski as an opener against the Marlins (54-90) on Tuesday night.

First pitch is set for 6:40 ET and the game will be aired on SportsNet Pittsburgh.

Weather

Temperatures will be around 80 degrees at the start of the game with mostly sunny skies. Winds NNW at 5 mph.

The Pittsburgh Pirates Will Send Out RHP Carmen Mlodzinski (2-5, 3.73 ERA)

Mlodzinski has been used as an opener three times this season. Between those three outings, he’s allowed one run in 4.1 innings.

The right-hander last pitched in the ninth inning on Sunday against the Nationals and allowed one run on a pair of hits. He’s made seven appearances since returning from the injured list and has pitched well for the most part outside of a four-run clunker in Cleveland on Aug. 30.

Mlodzinski’s bread and butter is his four-seam fastball. He’ll also rely on a slider, cutter and sweeper.

In three appearances against Miami in his career, Mlodzinski is 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA (2er/2.1ip).

The Miami Marlins Will Send Out RHP Adam Oller (1-2, 4.15 ERA)

The Marlins signed Oller to a minor-league deal on July 10 and he’s made four starts since having his contract selected on Aug. 19.

The right-hander was roughed up in his last start against the Philadelphia Phillies. He took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits with five walks and six strikeouts in 5.1 innings.

Oller relies primarily on his four-seam fastball, which he uses 55% of the time. He also throws a slurve, curveball and changeup.

Oller, who was drafted by the Pirates in the 20th round in 2016, has yet to face them.

Marlins Hitters vs. Mlodzinski

  • Xavier Edwards: 0 for 1
  • Nick Fortes: 0 for 1
  • Jesus Sánchez: 0 for 1

Pirates Hitters vs. Oller

  • Joey Bart: 1 for 3
  • Isiah Kiner-Falefa: 0 for 2

Tidbits

  • Paul Skenes surpassed Cy Blanton with a first-inning strikeout of Connor Norby for the most in a single season by a Pirates’ rookie in the modern era.
  • After striking out nine, Skenes is up to 151 strikeouts on the year. He’s the fifth pitcher in MLB history to record 150-plus strikeouts in 20 games or fewer.
  • Oneil Cruz’s home run was his first since Aug. 9 — a span of 26 games in between home runs.
