Pirates Preview: Can Monday’s Magic Carry Over?

Spencer Horwitz, Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates walked off the San Francisco Giants 5-4 in the opener of a three-game series on Monday night.

Jack Suwinski hit a late two-run homer to bring the Pirates within one and scored the winning run on an Isiah Kiner-Falefa dribbler in the bottom of the ninth.

Winners of 10 of their last 13 games, the Pirates (49-64) will look to keep things rolling against the Giants (56-57) on Tuesday night.

First pitch is set for 6:40 p.m. ET, and the game will be broadcast on SportsNet Pittsburgh and 93.7 The Fan.

Weather

Temperatures will range from the 80s to lower 70s throughout the game with mostly sunny skies. Winds ESE at 5-7 mph.

RHP Mike Burrows (1-3, 3.88 ERA) Will Start for the Pirates

Burrows pitched against the Giants on Wednesday and allowed one run on three hits with seven strikeouts in six innings.

Over his last two starts, Burrows has allowed just one run on six hits with 12 strikeouts and two walks in 12 innings. He has a 1.59 ERA over his last three starts since allowing a career-high six runs on July 12.

Webb, who was opposite Burrows on Wednesday, fanned 11 batters and held the Pirates to one run in 5.2 innings.

It was a needed bounce-back outing for Webb, who had a 9.39 ERA over his last three starts entering play.

Webb’s 155 strikeouts on the season are tied for the sixth most in MLB. He also ranks eighth among National League starters in strikeouts per nine innings (9.87).
