Pirates Place Three on Injured List; Finalize Opening Day Roster

The Pittsburgh Pirates have finalized their opening day roster as catcher Jason Delay and left-handed pitcher Rob Zastryzny have been added to the club’s 26-man roster.

Delay beat out fellow catchers Kevin Plawecki and Tyler Heineman to back-up Austin Hedges while Zastryzny earned the final bullpen spot.

Additionally, left-hander Jarlín García (injury to nerves in upper left arm) has been placed on the 60-day injured list while right-handers JT Brubaker (right elbow discomfort) and Robert Stephenson (right elbow inflammation) have been placed on the 15-day IL.

Outfielder Ryan Vilade was designated for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.

The 13 pitchers on the club’s 26-man roster are: David Bednar, Roansy Contreras, Wil Crowe, Chase De Jong, Jose Hernandez, Rich Hill, Colin Holderman, Mitch Keller, Dauri Moreta, Johan Oviedo, Duane Underwood Jr., Vince Velasquez and Zastryzny.

Catchers: Delay, Austin Hedges

Infielders: Ji-hwan Bae, Rodolfo Castro, Ji Man Choi, Oneil Cruz, Ke’Bryan Hayes, Carlos Santana

Outfielders: Connor Joe, Andrew McCutchen, Bryan Reynolds, Canaan Smith-Njigba and Jack Suwinski

The Pirates open up their 2023 season against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark. First pitch: 4:10 ET.
