Pirates Place Andrew McCutchen on 10-Day Injured List
After exiting Friday’s game against the Seattle Mariners, the Pittsburgh Pirates have placed designated hitter Andrew McCutchen on the 10-day injured list with left knee inflammation.
McCutchen has served as the Pirates’ primary designated hitter for the majority of the season. In 101 games, the 37-year-old has slashed .235/.336/.405 with 14 doubles, a triple, 16 home runs and 40 RBIs. He lands on the injured list in the midst of an 11-game hitting streak dating back to July 28.
McCutchen leads the team in runs scored with 59, is second in on-base percentage and ranks third in home runs, RBIs and hits (89).
The Pirates pulled McCutchen from a couple different games over the last couple weeks as he dealt with the nagging injury. This is the first time this season he’s landed on the injured list.
Oneil Cruz, who also left Friday’s game early with left ankle discomfort, is serving as the Pirates’ designated hitter against Seattle on Saturday afternoon. Isiah Kiner-Falefa is atop the lineup in McCutchen’s usual leadoff spot and playing second base.
To take McCutchen’s spot on the roster, the Pirates recalled infielder Alika Williams from Triple-A Indianapolis. Williams has appeared in 25 games with the Pirates this season at shortstop and second base and has hit .210 with a .536 OPS.
In 36 games with Indianapolis, Williams has slashed .298/.379/.390 with nine doubles, two triples, 13 RBIs and a pair of stolen bases.
Additionally, left-handed reliever Ryan Borucki will start a rehab assignment with Indianapolis on Saturday. Borucki has been on the IL since Apr. 7 with left triceps inflammation. He’s made four appearances with the Pirates in 2024 and allowed two runs with six strikeouts in 3.1 innings.
Borucki originally started a rehab assignment in the middle of July but suffered a setback.
