Pirates Option Adonis Medina; Reassign Austin Brice

Adonis Medina

The Pirates announced that they have optioned right-handed pitcher Adonis Medina to Triple-A Indianapolis and reassigned right-hander Austin Brice to minor league camp.

Medina was claimed off waivers from the Phillies on March 16 but only made one spring appearance. It was a rough outing for Medina who allowed four runs in 0.2 innings. Medina pitched 11.2 innings with the Phillies between 2021-21. He posted a 3.86 ERA with 10 strikeouts.

It seemed Medina had a shot at cracking the Opening Day roster, but after only appearing in one game, the Pirates will send him to Indianapolis to start the year.

Brice was signed as a minor league free agent last month. Brice made four spring appearances, totaling three innings. He allowed 12 earned runs on nine hits, walked six and picked up five strikeouts. Brice has totaled 162 innings in his Major League career with the Marlins, Reds and Red Sox. He has a career 5.17 ERA/5.15 FIP.

The Pirates active spring roster now stands at 39.
