It finally happened.

Pirates’ 2024 first round pick and MLB No. 1 overall prospect Konnor Griffin earned his promotion to Double-A Altoona on Sunday, Aug. 17, leaving just one tier of affiliated baseball between himself and the big leagues. Griffin picked up four hits over the weekend, his last two days with the Greensboro Grasshoppers, including a double, a single, a stolen base and a caught stealing on Saturday, Aug. 16.

Griffin concluded his time in Greensboro by slashing .325/.423/.510 with 11 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 36 RBI and 33 steals in 51 games. The 19-year-old began the year with the Bradenton Marauders, where he hit .338 with a .932 OPS, 10 doubles, two triples, nine home runs and 26 steals.

Pirates’ 2022 first round draft pick Termarr Johnson enjoyed an excellent week at the plate, picking up at least two hits on three separate occasions: three singles on Tuesday, Aug. 12, four hits (including a double) on Thursday, Aug. 14, and a double and a single the following day. In doing so, the 21-year-old increased his batting average from .249 to .268 and his OPS from .709 to .745… before taking a pitch off the wrist and going down in obvious pain. Johnson left the game and hasn’t appeared since, although the Pirates haven’t given a status update yet.

Edward Florentino continued to rake in Bradenton, hitting a pair of home runs on the week, while 28-year-old trade deadline acquisition Cam Devanney hit his second home run in 25 games since joining Triple-A Indianapolis… after hitting 18 in 69 games in the Royals’ organization.

On the mound, Hunter Barco fanned five across four scoreless innings on Wednesday, Aug. 14, one of his better starts in an up-and-down second half. Bubba Chandler continued to struggle, striking out five batters in just 3.1 innings but giving up four runs, and flamethrowing right-hander Wilber Dotel struck out six batters across six innings of one run ball for Double-A Altoona.
