Pirates Minor League Report: Deadline Pickups Make Early Impact, Chandler Struggles

The Pirates acquired shortstop prospect Cam Devanney from the Kansas City Royals in return for Adam Frazier, and the 28-year-old has lit up the International League since reporting to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Currently slashing .292/.424/.417 with three doubles and a home run in 14 games, Devanney picked up all four of those extra base hits last week, including a game with two doubles on Sunday, Aug. 3. Another recent Pirates acquisition to enjoy success at the plate is second baseman Ronny Simon, a June waiver pickup with nine doubles, seven home runs and a .287/.380/.455 slash line in 45 Triple-A games.
Edward Florentino continued his recent run of success at the plate with a homer, a double and a walk on Thursday, July 31, while three different Pirates’ prospects came within a base hit of hitting for the cycle during the week: Billy Cook (homer) and deadline acquisition Sammy Stafura (homer) both did so on Friday, Aug. 1, and 2022 first round pick Termarr Johnson (double) did so on Sunday, Aug. 3.
Johnson logged three hits and stole two bases on Tuesday, July 29, the same day that 2024 first round pick and MLB Pipeline No. 1 prospect Konnor Griffin hit a double and tripled.
Pitching performances were more of a mixed bag, with Bubba Chandler knocked around for five runs in 5.1 innings. Hunter Barco continued to struggle with the adjustment to Triple-A, yanked after 2.2 innings and three earned runs on Friday, Aug. 1, while Carlson Reed enjoyed a rebound performance with five innings of one run ball on Tuesday, July 29.
