Pirates Minor League Report: Chen and Diamond Deal

Pirates' prospect Charles McAdoo takes the field for the Bradenton Marauders.

Pirates’ affiliates picked up two wins on Thursday night, with strong pitching from Altoona and Greensboro headlining the action.



The Altoona Curve defeated the Bowie BaySox 3-1, riding seven innings of one-run ball from Po-Yu Chen. Strong pitching continued in Greensboro, where the Grasshoppers blanked the Winston-Salem Dash 3-0. Derek Diamond kicked off the shutout with six scoreless innings, striking out five batters before Yoldin De La Paz carried it to the finish line with a nine out save.

The Bradenton Marauders fell 7-3 to the Jupiter Hammerheads, while Triple-A Indianapolis saw their scheduled doubleheader with the Columbus Clippers rained out.

Here’s a look at the top performances amongst the Pirates’ system on Thursday.

Triple-A Indianapolis (38-47)

DNP: rain.

Double-A Altoona (37-47)

LF Tres Gonzales

  • Game: 1-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base.
  • Season: .207/.305/.245 with 5 doubles and a triple in 58 games.

RHP Po-Yu Chen

  • Game: 7 IP, 1 ER, 7 K’s.
  • Season: 90 IP, 3.90 ERA, 63 K’s in 17 appearances (15 starts).

High-A Greensboro (52-31)

RHP Derek Diamond

  • Game: 6 IP, 0 ER, 5 K’s.
  • Season: 58 IP, 3.72 ERA, 51 K’s in 14 appearances (10 starts).

LF Luke Brown

  • Game: 1-for-4 with a homer.
  • Season: .175/.293/.336 with 2 doubles and 7 homers in 48 games.

Single-A Bradenton (37-47)

3B Juan Jerez

  • Game: 3-for-4 with a double.
  • Season: .243/.317/.405 with 6 doubles and 2 homers in 24 games.

1B Justin Miknis

  • Game: 1-for-3 with a homer and a walk.
  • Season: .170/.323/.245 with a double and a homer in 21 games.
