Pirates prospects with the Greensboro Grasshoppers made history for the second time in nine days, pitching their second combined perfect game of the season on Sunday, July 13.

Hung-Leng Chang took the lead with five innings pitched, handing off to Joshua Loeschorn, Jake Shirk and Jarod Bayless in succession. Shirk also took part in the Grasshoppers’ July 4 perfecto, making him one of the only pitchers (if not the only) in the history of professional baseball to do so. Catcher Geovanny Planchart was behind the dish for both feats.

Pirates’ prospects put together another bid at a no-hitter the previous day, with Drake Fellows getting through five hitless innings on just 65 pitches before getting a puzzling hook.

Around the rest of the system, Thomas Harrington pitched six innings with no earned runs on Tuesday, July 8. He then got a quick hook on July 13 after allowing three runs in three innings. Bubba Chandler continued to respond in a positive fashion to his All-Star Futures Game snub, fanning seven batters across six scoreless innings on Thursday, July 10, while Antwone Kelly struck out nine batters in 4.2 innings for Double-A Altoona that same day.

Pirates’ hitting prospects Will Taylor (a 2024 fifth round pick out of Clemson), P.J. Hilson and 2024 trade deadline acquisition Billy Cook each logged two homer games

Bradenton outfielder Edward Florentino’s hot hitting cooled off, meanwhile, but he still managed to begin the week with a home run.
