Pirates’ Konnor Griffin New Top Prospect in Baseball

The top prospect in baseball belongs to the Pittsburgh Pirates. After Boston Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony graduated from prospect eligibility, Konnor Griffin has ascended to the top of the rankings.
The Pirates chose Griffin with the ninth pick in the 2024 draft, the first prep player taken last year. Questions over his hit tool allowed the Mississippi-native to fall into the Pirates’ lap, and he’s silenced any concerns since making his professional debut.
Griffin began the season with Low-A Bradenton, where he slashed an astonishing .338/.396/.538 with 10 doubles, two triples, nine home runs, 36 RBI and 26 steals in 50 games. The 19-year-old was promoted to High-A Greensboro in June and has continued to impress.
In 29 games since his promotion, Griffin owns a .296/.408/.463 batting line with six doubles, four home runs, 17 RBI and 16 stolen bases. He was named the South Atlantic League Player of the Week for June 15.
The Pirates view Griffin as the shortstop of the future, though he’s also dabbled in center field. Given how quickly he’s ascended so far in his career, it’s at least possible that Griffin finishes the season in Doble-A Altoona if he’s able to continue his success.
Griffin is one of two Pirates’ prospects in the top five of MLB Pipeline’s top 100 list. Right-handed pitcher Bubba Chandler is ranked fifth as he awaits his MLB debut in Triple-A Indianapolis.
