Pirates Fall Flat In Rain-Interrupted Affair With Padres

PITTSBURGH — Tuesday’s game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres at PNC Park was delayed by 2 hours and 40 minutes. The Pirates are probably wishing play didn’t resume.

Relievers Jake Woodford and Kyle Nicolas combined to allow four runs in the fifth inning while the Pirates (56-56) were shutout by the Padres (62-52) in a 6-0 loss.

Recap

Woodford (0-3) replaced Falter after the delay and through two scoreless innings before San Diego got to him in the fifth. Tyler Wade singled home a run on a cue shot up the middle for the first run of the inning.

Nicolas relieved Woodford following Wade’s single and allowed three more runs to come home to score. Donovan Solano ripped a two-run single to left field and Xander Bogaerts followed with an opposite-field single to plate another run.

Falter had tossed two-scoreless innings on two hits and a strikeout in his second start since returning from the injured list.

Solano singled home two more runs in the top of the ninth against Dennis Santana.

Six different Padres’ pitchers combined to shut out the Pirates. Right-hander Bryan Hoeing (2-2) was the winning pitcher for San Diego with 3.2 scoreless innings of one-hit ball after the delay.

Key Moment

The Pirates brought the tying run up to the plate in Jared Triolo with two outs in the bottom of the seventh but he struck out against left-hander Tanner Scott. Triolo is batting .160 (13 for 81) dating back to June 6.

Star of the Game

Solano went 4 for 5 with four RBIs. It marked his first four-hit game as well as his first four-RBI game of the year.

Stat to Know

The Pirates are now 7-45 on the season when being outhit by their opponent. Pittsburgh is 40-8 when outhitting their opponent and 9-4 when hits are even.

Noteworthy

  • Andrew McCutchen went 1 for 3 with a walk. He extended his hitting streak to six games.
  • Bryan Reynolds went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts. It was only the second three-strikeout game of the season for Reynolds — also on June 12 at St. Louis.

Up Next

Marco Gonzales (1-1, 3.72 ERA) will be on the mound for the Pirates in the second game of the series on Wednesday night. Michael King (9-6, 3.26 ERA) will start for the Padres: First pitch: 6:40 ET.
