MLB Draft, Pittsburgh Pirates

The third and final day of the 2024 MLB Draft kicks off at 2pm EDT on Tuesday, leaving the Pirates with ten selections, one for each of the last ten rounds.

After selecting high school players with four of their first five draft picks, headlined by ninth overall pick Konnor Griffin out of Mississippi’s Jackson Prep School, the Pirates went heavy on college prospects for Day 2, selecting four pitchers, two shortstops, a catcher and an outfielder.

Follow along for each of Pittsburgh’s draft picks today using Pittsburgh Baseball Now’s live tracker.

Round 11 (Pick 324) – Jacob Bimbi, LHP, Western Kentucky

The Pirates tripled down with their third collegiate left-hander of the draft, nabbing six foot tall, 185 pound senior Jacob Bimbi out of Western Kentucky University. Bimbi posted a 6.09 ERA in his lone season with the Hilltoppers but showed swing-and-miss potential, striking out 71 batters in 54.2 innings pitched.

Before Western Kentucky, Bimbi pitched two seasons at Wabash Valley Community College in his native Illinois. He also spent his junior season at Tennessee, and possesses a lively fastball that sits in the low 90s.

Round 12 (Pick 354) – Camden Janik, C, Illinois

Pittsburgh grabbed their second catcher of the draft in the twelfth round, picking catcher Camden Janik out of Illinois on his 22nd birthday. Janik stands 5-foot-10, weighs 195 pounds and also spent time in the outfield during his college days.

A two-year starter, Janik batted .356 with 15 doubles, two triples and 7 homers in 55 games, also drawing 29 walks.

Round 13 (Pick 384) – Matt McShane, RHP, St. Joe’s

The Pirates went in-state for their thirteenth round pick, selecting Matt McShane out of St. Joseph’s University in the southeastern corner of the commonwealth. At 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, the junior right-hander primarily pitched out of the bullpen, logging a 3.95 ERA with 57 strikeouts in 43.1 innings. His pitch selection includes a fastball that touches the mid-90s, a mid-80s slider and a changeup that sits around 80 miles per hour.

Round 14 (Pick 414) – Ian Farrow, OF, Florida Gulf Coast University

Another round, another collegiate player for the Pirates, who selected outfielder Ian Farrow out of Florida Gulf Coast University. A four-year starter who stands 6-foot-2 and weighs 215 pounds, Farrow spent three years at FGCU and transferred to Miami for his junior season, promptly flipping back for his senior year swan song.

Farrow showed his ability to hit for both average and power with the Eagles, batting .375 with 17 doubles, two triples and 15 homers in 47 games. He also flashed excellent plate discipline, walking 38 times.

Round 15 (Pick 444) – Ethan Lege, OF/3B, Ole Miss

We’ve reached the halfway point of the third day of the draft, and the Pirates selected fifth-year senior Ethan Lege out of Ole Miss. A 6-foot-1, 215 pound righty who played in both the outfield and infield between Nicholls State, junior college and Ole Miss, Lege hit .323 with 11 doubles and 13 homers in 43 games.

Round 16 (Pick 474) – Brian Curley, RHP, VCU

The run on collegiate arms continued, as the Pirates began the second half of Day 3 with the selection of right-hander Brian Curley out of VCU. Curley clocks in at 5-foot-1o and 200 pounds and can reach the mid-90s with his fastball despite relatively short stature.

He posted a 2.87 ERA with 78 strikeouts in 78.1 innings in 2024, his sophomore season, good enough for him to earn an offer from the University of Georgia in the transfer portal.

Round 17 (Pick 504) – Andrew Patrick, OF, Wright State (OH)

Pittsburgh selected another outfielder, picking 6-foot-4, 195 pound Andrew Patrick out of Ohio’s Wright State University. Patrick hit .244 with six doubles and eight homers this season, walking 25 times and swiping 17 bases. A relative down year as he spent the first few weeks injured, Patrick cleared the 20-double, 20-homer and 30-steal plateaus in 2023, setting a Division 1 record in the process.

Round 18 (Pick 534) – Jake Shirk, RHP, Wright State

Go ahead and pencil General Manager Ben Cherington in as one of Wright State’s biggest fans in existence. The Pirates selected 6-foot-2, 200 pound right-hander Jake Shirk out of the Horizon League powerhouse, acquiring a three-year starter who pitched significant innings in each of his four years in college.

A Friday starter, he pitched 78.2 innings in 14 starts, striking out 64 batters in doing so, although his ERA sat at a career high 6.41.

Round 19 (Pick 564) – Joe Vogatsky, RHP, JMU

Pittsburgh’s emphasis on adding pitching continued in the penultimate round when they selected six foot tall, 215 pound right-hander Joe Vogatsky out of JMU.

Toronto selected Vogatsky following his junior season in 2023, but he decided to bet on himself and return to college for another season, looking to finish his degree and make the NCAA tournament. Pitching out of the bullpen, he logged a 3.34 ERA in 29.2 innings, striking out 36 batters. While the Dukes did make the postseason, rather than improving his draft stock, Vogatsky fell five rounds into the Pirates’ lap.

Round 20 (Pick 594) – Taylor Penn, RHP, Woodford County HS (KY)

The Pirates rounded things out with Taylor Penn, a prep arm out of central Kentucky. His fastball sits in the high 80s with arm side run, while he also mixes in a slider and a changeup that dot the high 70s.
