PITTSBURGH — The temperatures in Pittsburgh over the weekend were hot. Maybe the cause was the Pirates’ bats radiating heat for three-straight days.

The Pirates’ offense continued to sizzle and set a season high in runs in their 12-1 win over the New York Mets at PNC Park on Sunday afternoon to complete the series sweep.

How We Got There

The Pirates (35-50) erupted for five runs, all with two outs, off Mets starter Frankie Montas in the first inning.

Ke’Bryan Hayes opened the scoring with a two-run single to center. Oneil Cruz followed with a two-run home run as the first of back-to-back home runs with Tommy Pham.

Andrew McCutchen put the Pirates up 6-0 with a sacrifice fly in the second, and the Mets (48-37) scored in the top of the fifth on a Luis Torrens solo home run off Mike Burrows.

The Pirates immediately responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Bryan Reynolds led off the inning with his 10th home run of the year, and Pham put Pittsburgh ahead 8-1 with an RBI single to left with two outs.

Cruz hit is second home run of the game in the bottom of the seventh to give the Pirates’ their season-high tying 10th run.

The Pirates tacked on two more in the bottom of the eighth off position player Travis Jankowski.

Key Moment

Oneil Cruz’s first home run was his first since June 10 and helped spark a big inning, which set the tone for the rest of the game.
