Derek Shelton has announced that JT Brubaker will be the Pirates opening day starter on April 7th against the St. Louis Cardinals. This is Brubaker’s first-ever opening day start. Brubaker was drafted in 2015 in the 6th round out of the University of Akron.

So far this spring, Brubaker has pitched 8.0 innings with eight strikeouts and a 4.50 ERA. With the way the starting rotation was looking, most expected Jose Quintana to be the opening starter.

The 28-year-old Brubaker has been with the big league club since 2020 and has amassed 171 innings pitched with a 5.24 ERA in 35 games. Now we wait to hear the rest of the opening day lineup, which is expected to be announced very soon.
