Pirates AFL Updates: Termarr Johnson Returns After Scare With Another Big Game
There was a brief serious pause for concern for Pittsburgh Pirates infield prospect Termarr Johnson in his Arizona Fall League debut with the Scottsdale Scorpions on Wednesday night.
Johnson couldn’t have had a much better game as he reached base safely three times including belting a leadoff homer to open the game. But the Pirates’ 2022 first-rounder hobbled off the field with assistance after an awkward looking swing and a miss in an at-bat during the eighth inning.
A collective sigh of relief was let out when Johnson was back on the field celebrating the win with his teammates. It was later revealed that Johnson was dealing with cramps.
Johnson returned to the field on Thursday night in the Scorpions’ 12-5 loss to the Surprise Saguaros. The 20-year-old again reached base three times. He drew a walk in his second plate appearance of the game, tripled in the seventh and singled in his final at-bat in the ninth. He also scored a pair of runs.
Through his first two games of the AFL, Johnson is 4 for 8 with a homer, a triple, a pair of walks, two RBIs and four runs scored.
Johnson wasn’t the only Pirates’ prospect to appear in Thursday’s game. Outfield prospect Sammy Siani went 1 for 5 and infielder Kervin Pichardo finished 1 for 4. It was the latter’s team debut.
The Scorpions (1-2) will next face the Glendale Desert Dogs on Friday night.
