Pirates AFL Updates: Johnson Doubles, Curtis Roughed Up
Pirates’ minor leaguers playing for the Scottsdale Scorpions continued their Arizona Fall League schedule on Tuesday, suffering a lopsided 15-2 loss in which three Young Bucs participated.
2022 first round pick Termarr Johnson batted leadoff and played second base, doubling to begin the sixth inning and later taking third base on a fly out. He stayed on third, though, as the Scorpions’ anemic offense couldn’t advance him the final 90 feet.
All in all, Johnson went 1-for-4. His batting average now sits at .357 in four games with Scottsdale, and his 1.312 OPS sits toward the top of all Scorpions players.
Khristian Curtis, a 2023 12th round pick who came on strong in the second half of this season after a rough first two months with the Bradenton Marauders, made his second start for the Scorpions. The hard-throwing right-hander got through three innings before leaving with two aboard and no outs in the fourth. Both runners came around to score, charging him with four total runs on the day. Curtis threw just half of his 54 pitches for strikes, allowing six hits and three walks to just two strikeouts.
Fellow Pirates’ right-hander Derek Diamond contributed 1.1 innings in relief, entering with two aboard and talented LSU product Tre’ Morgan coming to the plate. Diamond allowed a two-run double to Morgan before escaping the frame with a strikeout, then pitched a clean seventh.
The Scorpions will continue their Fall League schedule at 9:30pm EDT, hosting the Salt River Rafters and trying to improve on their 2-4 record.
