Pesky Pirates Win Second-Straight Over Phillies; Davis Slugs Another Clutch Homer

PITTSBURGH — For the second-straight game, Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Henry Davis came up clutch with a home run.
Davis’ go-ahead homer in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Pirates to a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies at PNC Park on Saturday.
How We Got There
Kyle Schwarber hit a solo home run off Andrew Heaney with one out in the top of the first to give the Phillies (37-27) the early advantage. Heaney exited the game with left calf cramping in the sixth.
The Pirates (25-50) tied the game at 1-all in the bottom of the first when Andrew McCutchen followed Nick Gonzales’ leadoff triple with a base hit to center.
Davis hit a go-ahead home run off Phillies starter Ranger Suárez (4-1), who suffered his first loss of the season. His 401-foot solo shot to left-center put the Pirates ahead 2-1.
Relievers Isaac Mattson, Dennis Santana and David Bednar held the Phillies scoreless over the game’s final three innings. Mattson (1-0) earned his first big-league win while Bednar recorded his eighth save of the season.
Key Moment
After Andrew Heaney exited with an injury in the seventh inning with nobody out, Isaac Mattson stranded an inherited runner at third base. He struck out Nick Castellanos and got J.T. Realmuto and pinch-hitter Bryson Stott to fly out.
