Perrotto: Potentially Career-Altering Opportunity Awaits Rodolfo Castro (+)

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Pirates have given Rodolfo Castro a significant vote of confidence.

When the Pirates reached down to Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday to make a roster move in the wake of shortstop Oneil Cruz’s breaking his ankle a day earlier, they recalled Mark Mathias.

Mathias is a utility player by trade. However, the 28-year-old has yet to play an inning at shortstop in his 47-game major-league career that has spanned three seasons.

They could have called up veteran Chris Owings, who has started 230 games as a shortstop over his 10-year career. Tucapita Marcano could have also received the call after splitting time at shortstop with Owings in the early going of this season at Indy.
