PBN Around the Horn: How Do You Get Fired on Your Off Day?!

Welcome to the PBN Around the Horn. Here you’ll find news and notes from across Major League Baseball, your Pittsburgh Pirates, and around the Sports Now network.

UPDATE (11:01 a.m.) Tuesday night the Yomiuri Giants, (professional baseball team in Japan) agreed to terms with former Pirate Gregory Polanco. Below is Polanco’s statement on joining the team.

“I’m very excited to join the Yomiuri Giants army. I would like to thank Vice President Otsuka, Director Hara, and Mr. International Yoshimura for giving me the opportunity. I’ve heard that it’s very wonderful about Japan, the city of Tokyo, and the enthusiastic Giants fans. I’m looking forward to meeting the leaders and teammates. Let’s show the best performance and win together. Let’s go!”

I’ve been simmering over a certain subject for a little while now, and that subject is the Ken Rosenthal situation. I’m reminded of the movie quote, “how do you get fired on your day off?!” While journalists never really have an off day, the quote still remains in my head rent-free. In a profession filled with opinions and stating facts, Rosenthal was let go for doing both.

“{Manfred} has been beholden to the owners and out of touch with the players,” said Rosenthal in a piece he wrote on MLB’s commissioner Rob Manfred. This statement, along with others, was enough for Manfred to cut ties with Rosenthal. So now we all must wait and see how fellow journalists respond to Manfred and his sensitive ways.

(Sidebar) As a voice for the voiceless and the public eye, journalists are empowered to speak what is right and just. If a commissioner fires someone over hurt feelings, then one could expect a slippery slope of actions to occur.
