Paul Skenes to Make History With Second All-Star Game Start

Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Paul Skenes will be the starting pitcher for the National League in Tuesday night’s All-Star Game, when he will make history.
NL manager Dave Roberts announced on Saturday that Skenes will start at Truist Park in Atlanta. Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal will pitch for the American League.
Skenes will become the first pitcher to be a starter in All-Star Games during each of the first two years of his major-league career. Skenes pitched one scoreless inning last year in the Midsummer Classic in Arlington, Texas.
Four other players have started All-Star Games in their first two seasons: Joe DiMaggio (seven, 1936-42), Ichiro Suzuki (four, 2021-24), Rod Carew (three, 1967-69), and Frank Robinson (two, 1956-57). All four are Hall of Famers.
Skenes’ record is just 4-8 in 20 starts this season. However, his 2.01 ERA led the NL going into Saturday’s games.
