Nick Gonzales Exits Pirates Opener After Hitting Home Run

UPDATE: The Pirates announced that Gonzales exited the game with recurrent left ankle discomfort. He is currently being examined and treated by the Pirates medical staff. The Pirates will provide an update as new information becomes available. His status is day-to-day.
Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Nick Gonzales was removed from the game with an injury after hitting a two-run home run against the Miami Marlins on Opening Day.
Gonzales’ lined a homer over the left field fence to give the Pirates a 4-1 lead but hobbled around the bases before reaching home plate.

Gonzales was replaced by Adam Frazier at second base. It marked the first time Frazier appeared in a game for the Pirates since 2021 after he signed as a free agent in the offseason.
Gonzales, who batted sixth in the lineup, finished the game 1 for 3 with his two-run homer after striking out in his first two at-bats. It was the first time in his career that the 2020 first-round draft pick was on the roster for Opening Day.
