As the date for the release of MLB The Show 25 draws nearer, Pittsburgh Pirates prized starting pitcher Paul Skenes is vying to be the cover athlete.

Though no formal announcement has been made just yet, Skenes is one of several young players who took to social media on Monday to create a stir regarding who ends up on the cover.

In addition to Skenes, Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz posted a similar message on Instagram. Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson did the same on his Instagram account.

Skenes wrapped up a stellar first season with the Pirates that began less than a year after he was drafted with the top pick out of LSU. The 22-year-old won the National League Rookie of the Year award after finishing 11-3 with a 1.96 ERA and 170 strikeouts in 133 innings pitched.

De La Cruz was an All-Star for the Reds and finished eighth in the MVP race. He finished with an .809 OPS, 36 doubles, 10 triples, 25 home run, 76 RBIs and stole a whopping 67 bases for the Reds. Henderson, meanwhile, finished fourth in the American League MVP voting and posted a 9.1 bWAR. The 23-year-old slugged 37 home runs and drove in 92 runs to go along with an .893 OPS.

Though MLB The Show and San Diego Studios have yet to announce who the cover athlete will be or the release date, the game is typically made available in March.

If Paul Skenes ended up on the cover, he would be the first Pirates’ player to do so since Andrew McCutchen on MLB The Show 13.
