Joey Bart, Martín Pérez Leave Pirates’ Game With Injuries
Joey Bart started at catcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday afternoon but made it through one inning before being removed with an injury to his left thumb. He’s currently being examined by the medical staff.
Though it’s unclear exactly when the injury occurred, when the Pirates took the field for the top of the second inning, Bart was replaced behind the plate by Yasmani Grandal.
Grandal got the Pirates on the board in the bottom of the second with an RBI-single to left field for an early 1-0 lead.
Bart wasn’t the only Pirates’ player taken out of the game. Starting pitcher Martín Pérez was taken out of the game after three innings due to an injury to his left groin.
Pérez had to cover first on a ground ball off the bat of Jarred Kelenic in the top of the third inning and was walking gingerly back to the mound. The Pirates went out to check on him, but Pérez remained in the game for the time being.
He was ultimately replaced in the game by right-handed reliever Carmen Mlodzinski, who was on the mound for the fourth inning.
In addition to the Pirates’ injuries, Atlanta Braves right fielder and reigning National League MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. left the game with left knee soreness in the top of the first inning.
