Clint Hurdle, Pittsburgh Pirates

Former Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle will be back on a big-league bench. The 67-year-old was named hitting coach for the Colorado Rockies for the remainder of the 2025 season.

Hurdle replaces Hensley Meulens, who was relieved of his duties after two-plus seasons in the position.

Hurdle is back on the coaching staff of the team he managed from 2002-09 and took to the World Series in 2007 before falling to Red Sox.

Pirates fans will of course remember Hurdle as manager in Pittsburgh from 2011-19. He helped the Pirates break a consecutive losing season streak that spanned 20 years and got the team to the postseason three years in a row from 2013-15. Pittsburgh hasn’t reached the playoffs since.

While with the Pirates, Hurdle was named the 2013 National League Manager of the Year and ranks fourth in franchise history with 735 wins. He’s one of 18 Pirates’ managers to have a winning percentage better than .500 (735-720, .505).

Prior to his managerial days, Hurdle was a hitting coach for the Rockies from 1997 until he was named manager. He also served as the hitting coach of the Texas Rangers in 2010 and helped guide them to the American League Pennant before being hired by the Pirates.

Hurdle, who was serving as a special assistant to the GM, joins Bud Black’s staff. Black has been the Rockies manager since 2017.

The staff also has another member with ties to Western Pennsylvania. Third base coach Warren Schaeffer is a graduate of Greensburg Central Catholic.
