Former Pirates Outfielder Felipe Montemayor Dies at 96

Felipe Montemayor, who briefly played outfield for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1950s, has died. He was three days short of his 97th birthday when he passed away on Tuesday.



Montemayor played in 64 major-league games, all with the Pirates – 28 in 1953 and 38 in 1955. He was a career .173/.298/.287 hitter with two home runs.

Montemayor also played 10 seasons in the Mexican League. He retired following the 1966 season and became a sportswriter, penning the popular 3 and 2 column in El Norte.

Felipe Angel Montemayor was born on Feb. 7, 1928, in Monterrey, Mexico.
