Derek Shelton Announces OF/1B Bligh Madris’ Promotion From Triple-A Indianapolis

Pirates manager Derek Shelton announced that the club called up outfielder Bligh Madris in his postgame press conference following Pittsburgh’s 4-3 win over the Giants on Sunday.

A ninth-round pick in 2017, Madris hit .304/.385/.519 with five home runs in 46 games with Triple-A Indianapolis this season, even with a slow April. He was the team’s rookie of the year in 2021.

A lefty bat, Madris spent time at first for the Indians as well, giving him a flexible skill set that could help him carve a place in the big leagues.

After Canaan Smith-Njigba landed on the 60-day IL with a broken wrist, the Buccos had just three outfielders on their roster. Madris’ promotion gives them much-needed depth.

No corresponding move has been announced, but with shortstop Oneil Cruz on his way to the bigs as well and the 14-pitcher allowance shrinking to 13 tomorrow, a roster shakeup is coming for the Pirates.
