BREAKING: Pirates Trade Ke’Bryan Hayes to Reds for Reliever, Infield Prospect

The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded Gold Glove third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes to the division-rival Cincinnati Reds, a source confirmed to Pittsburgh Baseball Now. In return for Hayes, the Pirates will get left-handed reliever Taylor Rogers and infield prospect Sammy Stafura.
Hayes, is in the fourth year of an eight-year, $70 million contract extension signed shortly after the start of the 2022 season.
The 28-year-old was in his sixth overall season with the Pirates after they selected him with the 32nd pick of the 2015 draft out of Concordia Lutheran High School in Texas.
In 576 career games with the Pirates, Hayes posted a .254/.307/.369 batting line with 101 doubles, 16 triples, 39 home runs, 212 RBI and 61 stolen bases. His best season came in 2023, when he hit .271 with a .762 OPS while setting career-highs in doubles (31), triples (7), home runs (15) and RBI (61).
But it’s defense that is Hayes’ calling card. Hayes won a National League Gold Glove at the hot corner in 2023 and is well on his way to winning another one this season.
Since the start of the 2020 season, nobody in baseball has had more defensive runs saved than Hayes’ 91. The next closest is Cleveland Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan with 60.
Rogers, a 10-year veteran who was in his first season with the Reds, went 2-2 with a 2.45 and 34 strikeouts in 33 innings across 40 appearances out of the bullpen. For his career, the 34-year-old owns a 3.28 ERA with 607 strikeouts in 523.2 innings and has recorded 83 saves.
Stafura, the Reds’ second-round pick in the 2023 draft, is ranked as the Reds’ ninth-best prospect according to MLB Pipeline. In 88 games with Class-A Daytona this season, the 20-year-old carries a .262/.393/.411 batting line with 18 doubles, nine triples, four home runs, 48 RBI and 28 stolen bases.
Infielder Jared Triolo will be recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis take Hayes’ spot on the Pirates’ active roster, a source informed Pittsburgh Baseball Now. Triolo, who like Hayes has a Gold Glove on his resumé, has totaled 55 games with the Pirates this season and hit .158 with a .519 OPS prior to getting optioned.
The Major League Baseball trade deadline is Thursday at 6 p.m. ET.
